WOODSIDE ENERGY

Global Design Director while at Unispace

Completed 2018 (Competition 2015)

65,000sqm (700,000sqft) NLA

Woodside is an Australian oil and gas company with a global presence, recognised for its world-class capabilities in LNG. As the largest independent oil and gas organization, Woodside is investing in analytics and artificial intelligence to position itself as a leader in innovation and be the premier organization trading in data for the industry.

As an Asia-pacific wide competition the newly formed Unispace team had to position our submission to be impactful and well researched amongst some of the world’s largest commercial design firms. We provided a future forward vision that matched the Woodside aspirations as we had no history or projects to be benchmarked against. For a period of 12 months I traveled to Perth to drive the workplace strategy and design concepts with the Woodside executive team and internal project management team whilst we grew the capability and expertise of the Unispace design and documentation team.

The Cox Howlett & Bailey Woodland designed base building has been developed with Malaysian developer AAIG on the site of the old Emu Brewery at the top end of St Georges Terrace. The overall composition of the campus consists of a 30 storey tower sitting atop of a 3 level podium with a 600 space carpark, innovation centre, retail plaza, 300 seat auditorium, child care centre, wellness centre with swimming pool, medical facility, flexible training rooms and a 3,000sqm roof terrace with BBQs basketball court and half soccer pitch. Also included in the masterplan, but not in the Unispace scope, is a hotel, residential tower and art gallery.

The project was developed from the strategy up with close consultation from the Woodside team co-located in our project studio. This world leading campus utilizes IBM’s artificial intelligence system Watson and newly developed voice recognition interface, Willow to provide data and analytics for informed decision-making. Several levels of advanced operations monitoring and controlling the “assets” has evolved to utilize specialist NASA robotics, drones, Google Glass and Microsoft HoloLens technology for real-time work monitoring the sensors and cameras positioned on the trains, ships, trucks and off-shore platforms.

The typical floors operate on a flexible “Right Space” principle we developed to ensure that all departments in the headquarters can function effectively alongside the engineers and data scientists trawling through the data gathered in the field to predict where the oil and gas is buried. On floor activity is monitored via fascial biometrics and agility enhanced by the Cisco Spark infrastructure connecting the building intelligence with the BMS system.

The project was delivered as an partial integrated fitout with Brookfield Multiplex.
