DLA Piper had merged with national firm Phillips Fox in 2012 which called for a new image to fall into the UK expectations for a global firm. While the Melbourne fitout was a reconfiguration of the client floor and new materiality, the opportunity for the Sydney partnership was to explore a new work typology where greater collaboration and teamwork was enhanced between Partners and practice groups.

I worked closely with James Calder on the strategy using my legal experience to deploy a concept based on the "courtyard" in which individuals can choose which space or room they use to complete their work. This configuration allowed for flexibility and expansion between courtyards and an increased open plan approach could be adopted over time. It is expected that the Melbourne office will adopt the next generation of this planning type and be more open and collaborative.
